S’ed - Center for Educational Services for the Museum and the Territory

The Center for Educational Services of the Museum and the Territory coordinates the system of state educational services in the places of our country\'s culture: museums, libraries, archives, archaeological areas and parks, monuments.

This commitment, enshrined since the establishment of the structure in 1998, includes a series of actions that fall under the provisions of the Act of address for the museum standards (DM 10.V.2001, Scope VII) and the Legislative Decree of 22 January 2004, no 42, referring to the museum\'s relationship with the public and to promote study and research and dissemination of knowledge of cultural heritage.

Since 2009, the Center is part of the new Directorate General of Management and Promotion of Cultural Heritage.

One of the objectives of the structure, perhaps the most challenging, is to invite the expectations, and consequently enhance the awareness of so-called \"non-audiences\" in the field of cultural heritage. This is a segment to which also international bodies devote themselves, such as Unesco ICOM (International Council of Museums), which through its committee CECA (Cultural Education Action) is promoting initiatives to raise awareness of the social strata that for various reasons is not aware of the museum and its educational policies. The Center is a member of ICOM and represented in CECA as a training and documentation structure for state educational didactic programs in Italy. This is the prototype of the study and research centers provided for in Article 118 of the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code as a place to start a network of experience and planning of the territory. These experiences and projects often demonstrate \'good practice\' which is often of great scientific value and could trigger excellent training experiences in the territory, but unfortunately these are still too unknown, even within the specialist circuit.

 



Activities

Good practices. A term behind which there are experimental and systemic projects, educational products, aids and materials for teachers and students, training and continuing education activities, seminars, lectures, labs, multi-sensory pathways, contests, theme tours, educational games, technology services and traditional archives and documentation of information, and experiences of social inclusion, promoted to strengthen the cultural heritage in an audience that in many ways is already interested in the topic (a “usual” user or close to) but above all to get closer to an audience that is still not aware of the cultural heritage.

This is the Center’s work, with experimental and innovative initiatives, a system of educational services, a significant and influential presence in the area, in the service of the national system and the public throughout. For this and with this audience and “non-audience” of the museum (a term used here with the most extensive and all-encompassing sense of cultural heritage), we work to disseminate knowledge and encourage its use, trying to improve the quality of service through constant educational research and experimental workshops involving more people and professionalism in heritage and cultural mediation.

Monitoring

What makes an educational practice a “good practice”? Another of the tasks of the Center is to monitor and analyze the projects and experiences, evaluate goals and results, provide methodological support to help reduce problems and improve the working strategies between different subjects with an education project in partnership: national education systems, institutions, associations and, more broadly, the territory.

A monitoring which is bound to have growing interest, also given the rapid evolution of communication systems and technological innovations and educational needs of a radically changed school that is pushing to find new systems of communication, so as not to risk the ineffectiveness of a personal growth process in cultural heritage that has one of its most powerful vehicles.

There are at least two direct consequences of the monitoring activities.

The first is the need to promote regular training courses on the teaching of cultural heritage in addressing issues which are \'hot\', presenting case studies, strengthening the dialogue with the territory. The latest of the courses promoted by the Center for Administration staff (October 2010), was called a \'network\' of ideas for cultural heritage: a symbolic way to emphasize the urgency of analyzing the changes taking place in the Italian school system Italian, the ways of communicating about cultural heritage to the public, evaluate performance, enter into a process of improvement.

The second, to protect the good educational practices, which are the result of careful thought and professional commitment by those responsible for educational services, and to avoid simply using the material in a period of time without leaving any lasting trace. For this purpose the S\'ed brand was created, to evaluate initiatives and innovations in the field of cultural heritage education. Thanks to the brand, registered with the Chamber of Commerce of Rome, creativity and planning is protected and can tie the product, but also the procedure, to the project’s designer and his institution.

Special education for audiences with disabilities. Agreements and memoranda of understanding

The Director General Department II supports activities relating to the application of Articles 118 and 119 of the Code, through the Center for Educational Services and the territory of the museum, also in relation to the public with disabilities, as set forth in the Ministerial Decree 20 July 2009. By virtue of these powers and strength of experience in the field of special education, some important agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed with the major national bodies for the protection and representation of persons with disabilities.

The educational services are available in branches throughout the nation. Each region has a system of educational services through its regional departments and superintendent administrations that design, promote and implement educational tours and workshops in museums and places of cultural relevance.
