Cultural heritage consists in performing and overseeing all of the activities that fall under the responsibility of the Administration of Cultural Heritage, in order to promote the knowledge of the national heritage and to ensure the best conditions for use and enjoyment of the heritage itself by any audience, to stimulate the development of culture.

Enhancement also includes educational goals that have close links with heritage, in order to improve the knowledge and, consequently, the conservation of cultural and environmental heritage, increasing their usability. The promotion and support of conservation of cultural heritage fall under the concept of enhancement.

With reference to the landscape, enhancement concerns the redevelopment of buildings and areas under protection, as well as the creation of new values regarding the landscapes. All of these operations must be conducted in ways that are compatible with protection and so as not to jeopardize the fundamental requirements.

The enhancement of cultural heritage is achieved through the establishment and stable organization of resources, facilities or networks, as well as the provision of technical expertise, combined with the use of financial resources or instruments designed to perform the duties and the achievement of the objectives pursued, in which private parties can also compete, cooperate or even participate in.

The participation and the centrality of citizens, in the scope of the general activities of the State, are priority objectives in the broader concept of enhancement, aimed at increasing the principles and strategies of development of the Italian cultural heritage.

Another main aim is to provide guidelines for enhancing the coordination and promotion of good practices in cooperation and service to the peripheral structures operating in the territory of the Administration, as well as to other government departments and local authorities, in order to assign an increasingly important role to local identities.

In this regard, attention is also paid in respect of the assets of immaterial nature, tied to national traditions, knowledge and creativity, that over the centuries that have characterized the Italian culture in its infinite variations, themselves constituting a significant added value to cultural heritage.

Enhancement also regards the economic importance of cultural heritage, for the impacts that are transversely determined in relation to its activities and its services, as well as the creation and use of its products.

Within the project for the state of cultural heritage promoted by the Directorate General of Management and Promotion of Cultural Heritage, the prime objectives are to enhance the enjoyment of the places of culture and enhance the cultural offer.
